Playfair Display

A pairing is a heading that leads and a body that stays out of the way.

Source Sans 3

Playfair Display leads. Source Sans 3 stays out of the way. That is a pairing.

How to pair fonts

Contrast one thing. Share another. Then test the pair in real copy, not a pangram.

A pairing is not two faces you like. It is a heading that leads and a body that stays out of the way. Most bad pairs fail the same way: they compete. Same weight, same width, same attitude. The page gets noisy, and you cannot tell what to read first.

Google Font pairing tools will happily suggest two popular sans. That is popularity, not a page. If you already have a family, start from its pairing page or open the pairing tool with that heading selected.

Contrast one thing

Pick one axis and push it. Serif with sans. Condensed with relaxed. High contrast with low. Leave the other axes related: similar x-height, similar era, similar width. Inter and Lora work because Inter is a UI grotesque and Lora is a reading serif. They do not share a skeleton.

Two geometric sans at the same size is a cousin fight. Montserrat plus Poppins looks busy, not designed. If you want one voice, stay in one family and use weight. Source Sans 3 and Source Serif 4 were drawn together. DM Sans and DM Serif Display too. That is the lazy good option, and it is fine.

Playfair Display + Source Sans 3. One size, one job each.

Left: two geometric sans at the same size. Right: contrast the size and the skeleton.

Three pairs that hold

These are starting points, not rules. Paste your own headline into the type tester before you ship any of them.

  • Inter + Lora

    A quiet interface

Inter keeps the chrome quiet. Lora takes the paragraph. Neither looks like a broken version of the other.

Playfair can be the title. Source Sans 3 can be the rest of the site, including the buttons.

  • Oswald + Open Sans

    Narrow on purpose

Oswald is condensed. Open Sans is the breath underneath. Same category, different width.

Try it in FontDash

Open Pairing, pick a heading, and read the sentence under each body. Those reasons are written per pair, not a generic “this is a serif.” When you have a heading and a body, copy the combined HTML <link>. That is the take. A screenshot of two names is not.

If you do not have a heading yet, Font Swiper asks whether you are setting a headline, reading, or UI, then shortlists from that job. Pairing comes after. Keep in Swiper is a shortlist, not an automatic favorite.

Public pairing pages exist for crawlers and for you: Playfair Display pairings, Roboto, Montserrat. No account.
